Anthropological research in Chile has a long tradition, even though its institutionalization took place only in the second half of the twentieth century. The historical context surrounding the incorporation of anthropology into the universities placed limitations on the discipline’s clear identity. Both military rule and the transition to democracy challenged the progress that had been finally made through congresses and state funding for research, which increased significantly after 1990. However, anthropology gained notoriety through its main achievements in the study of indigenous peoples and its contribution to the promotion of human and indigenous rights. Contemporary anthropology in Chile is an established discipline in the universities, in national research, and as a profession, and there is a growing scholarship in social anthropology.
